If you’re considering upgrading your air conditioning system, significant changes are on the horizon in 2025 that could influence your decision.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has introduced new rules affecting how air conditioning systems are manufactured and operated, including the introduction of new refrigerants and compliance standards
Here are a few things you need to know before the new EPA rules go into effect:
What’s Happening in the Industry
The HVAC industry is preparing to transition to new refrigerants required by the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act (AIM) of 2020.
This act phases down the use of existing refrigerants and establishes new requirements for refrigerants used in air conditioners and heat pumps.
When Will It Happen
Beginning January 1, 2025, all new residential air conditioners and heat pumps will be required to use A2L refrigerants. The equipment manufactured before this date has a one-year grace period to be installed.
Why This Matters
- New systems will cost more: The transition to A2L refrigerants is expected to raise manufacturing costs, which will likely be passed on to consumers. If you’re in the market for a new system, you can anticipate higher prices for A2L-compliant units than those currently available.
- New systems will include sustainable features: On the plus side, newer systems that meet these regulations will likely be more energy-efficient. While your initial investment may be greater, you could see long-term savings on your energy bills.
- You may need to time your replacement: If you plan to install a new air conditioning system, note that equipment manufactured before the 2025 deadline can still be installed until January 1, 2026. This gives you some extra time if you’re not ready to decide just yet.
What You Should Do
HVAC systems typically last up to 20 years. If your system is nearing the end of its lifespan, you should consider replacing it with a system that’s currently available or waiting to install a system with the new refrigerant.
Consult a licensed HVAC contractor who is knowledgeable about the impending changes. They can provide insights on the best systems for your needs and budget, helping you determine if it’s time to make the switch now.
