What Is an Expansion Tank?
An expansion tank is a metal cylinder that attaches to your water heater‘s cold water supply line. It absorbs any excess pressure generated when water is heated inside your water heater, protecting your water heater, pipes, and valves from damage.

Expansion Tank FAQs
Is an expansion tank required for a water heater?
Expansion tanks are a good idea for absorbing the excess pressure that a standard water heater can produce as water is heated and expands out of the tank.
In areas with closed plumbing systems, where a check valve prevents water from flowing back into the municipal water system and possibly contaminating it, expansion tanks are required for both standard and tankless water heaters.
Without the extra room the expansion tank provides, pressure can quickly build when water is heated, blowing out o-rings and damaging valves and other fittings.
How do expansion tanks work?
Expansion tanks are installed on the cold water supply line of the water heater. Inside the tank is an air bladder that collapses to absorb the extra pressure created when water is heated, letting water fill the tank.
Once the pressure is relieved, the air bladder expands, pushing the water out of the expansion tank back to the water heater.
When should I replace my expansion tank?
An expansion tank will last about five to 10 years. It should be replaced when it starts leaking near the base or the air valve, rusting through, or no longer holding pressure.
