Is Your A/C Unit Low on Freon?

Jun 1, 2022

Freon is extremely important when it comes to your A/C unit. If you want to keep your house cool during the hot summer days, pay attention to these five signs that your A/C unit could be low on freon.

1. It takes longer than usual to cool off your home

Freon absorbs the heat in the air and if there isn’t enough of it in your system, your home will feel a lot warmer than usual.

2. Your utility bills are higher than usual

If you are running low on freon, your A/C unit needs to work harder and longer to cool your home. This leads to higher electricity bills.

3. Air coming out of vents isn’t cold

This is one of the easiest things to spot because you will know right away when you feel the air coming out of the vent. If the air is not cool like you are used to, your unit is probably low on freon.

4. Ice build up on your refrigerant line

When the freon levels are low, the evaporator coil becomes much colder than it is supposed to be. This causes the evaporator coil to get too cold and the liquid flows back to the refrigerant line and causes ice to build up. If you don’t fix this problem right away, it could damage the compressor, which could lead to more expensive repairs and even replacing the entire unit.

5. You hear loud/unusual noises coming from your unit

If there is a leak in your unit and refrigerant is escaping, you might hear a hissing or bubbling sound.
