How to Repair Common Plumbing Issues

Jun 15, 2022

Like death and taxes, plumbing problems are a fact of life. Some serious issues require professional plumbing assistance, but others are relatively simple fixes that homeowners can handle on their own. These are some of the most common plumbing repairs and maintenance issues and how to repair them.

Dripping Faucets

You know the telltale drip — you’ve turned the faucet completely off, yet you can still hear it down the hall. This is a problem you don’t want to ignore because not only is a dripping faucet irritating, but it can quickly add up to significant amounts of wasted water.

Fortunately, fixing a dripping faucet is quite easy, even for amateurs. Usually, the drip is due to a worn cartridge, O-ring, or washer that needs to be replaced. To do so, you’ll need to first shut off the water to the faucet. Next, remove the faucet handle and cartridge. Clean the area, replace the faulty piece, then reassemble it.

Running Toilets

A running toilet is a common issue that’s surprisingly easy to fix. Like dripping faucets, running toilets can waste hundreds of gallons of water, so it’s important to address this issue. Toilets typically run long after they’ve been flushed due to a faulty flapper, which is the piece that seals the opening between the tank and bowl.

It’s not unusual for this piece to get worn or warped over time. If this is the cause of your running toilet, all you need to do is replace the flapper with a new one. These can be found at most hardware stores for $5 – $10.

Clogged Drains

Clogged drains are typically due to the buildup of hair and debris. If this is the case, you can grab a pair of needle-nose pliers to reach down the drain and remove the blockage. If that doesn’t work, you can try plunging the drain or using baking soda and vinegar to try to dissolve the blockage. However, in the most stubborn cases, your clogged drain may require a professional plumber who can quickly clean drains with a method like hydro jetting or high-pressure drain cleaning.

One of the best ways to tackle clogged drains is to prevent them from happening in the first place. This means using drain catchers in the kitchen, bathroom, and bathtubs to keep stray hairs, food, and other items from going down the drain. Remember to never pour grease down the drain — collect it and throw it away instead.
