3 Reasons Why Your Toilet Won’t Properly Flush

Jul 14, 2022

A toilet that doesn’t flush properly can be extremely frustrating to a homeowner. What could be the source of your toilet not flushing? Let’s look at the three most common reasons:

Low Water Level

For a toilet to flush properly, water enters the bowl and flows into the drain. This is caused by suction. When the water level is too low, there is a decreased suction that causes your toilet to partially flush or not at all. Making sure your toilet has the correct water level can be a quick fix to your flushing problem.

A Problem with the Flapper or Lift Chain

When you remove the lid from the back of your toilet, you will see the flapper and lift chain. The flapper is the circular rubber piece at the bottom of the toilet, and the lift chain is attached to the flapper and arm. If the lift chain is working properly, it will tighten as you flush the toilet, pulling the flapper and completely draining the water from the tank. The next step is to check and see if the flapper is leaking. If water is slowly leaking into the bowl, you will need to replace the flapper.

There’s a Clog

A clogged toilet can be very tricky. Sometimes, simply using a plunger can get the job done, but what do you do when that doesn’t work? Try turning off the water, adding hot water to the bowl and then flush the toilet.

If you have tried all of these techniques and your toilet is still not flushing correctly, then it is time to give Canady’s a call. Schedule an appointment, and we will send a trained professional to your home to diagnose the issue.
